Your personality in 100 words

April 21, 2019

If you had to describe your personality with a few words, what would they be?

It sounds simple, but try writing out all of the adjectives that describe you. I found this is surprisingly tough. I’m probably biased, but it’s much easier for me to describe my personality in quantitative terms than with more common adjectives.

After reading an older research study that compared personality dimensions to personal descriptions, I was inspired to build something at TraitLab that could automatically generate a decent list of self-descriptive words.

It’s easy to use: after answering a few multiple choice questions, you’ll see a wordcloud (and a separate list with definitions) of up to 100 adjectives describing your personality. Here’s my result:

My personality wordcloud from TraitLab
My personality wordcloud from TraitLab. Bigger words indicate more prominent personality aspects. Colors are random.

While I never would have thought of choosing words like meditative, analytical, or acquiescent (and yes, I did have to look a few defintions up), most of the generated words resonated with how I see myself — for better or worse.

This feature is now a paid feature in TraitLab Plus.
